shoujo kakumei utena
that which we call a rose
Shoujo Kakumei Utena translates to 'Revolutionary Girl Utena' and is also referred to in French as 'La Fillete Revolutionare' in the anime. It began as a manga series by Chiho Saito in 1996. The manga ended up being 5 volumes long. From there, the anime series was created, directed by Kunihiko Ikuhara.

Tenjou Utena lost her parents when she was young and all she remembers is that a prince gave her a ring and some advice. 'Never lose your strength or nobility and this ring will lead you to me' Deciding to become a prince who saves others, as opposed to the rescued princess, Utena's search for her 'prince' leads her to the prestigious Ohtori Academy. On the outside, it looks like a normal academy. For the members of the Academy's student council, it is a very different world. A mysterious force compels them to duel each other for possession of the Rose Bride, who holds the key to eternity. Utena stumbles upon this hidden world and, because of the ring given to her as a child, is pulled into the duels. But, as is noted in the show, was becoming a prince 'such a good idea?'

This anime is definitely one to make you think. The relationships are intricate and the plot twists are as abundant as otaku at an anime convention =D . The most striking difference between the anime and the manga was the ending. However, both endings are superior.

This anime may be a little much to handle for the anime novice, as I have had many friends ask me 'what the (bleep) are you watching??????' But then again, everyone is different. As for me, this was the second anime series I ever saw, and I loved it right away.
